The Our Science Literacy Bundle 7 includes fourteen (14) readers with Lexile scores 600L-740L. Reading Level Grade 4 - 5.
Earth In Balance: Earth has different parts: the geosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and magnetosphere. With the parts in balance, living things can stay alive and healthy. An imbalance can cause changes in weather, unhealthy air and oceans, and rising sea levels.
In Earthquakes, young readers learn the earth’s crust and upper mantle are broken up into huge pieces called plates that are carried along by moving magma in the lower mantle. The sudden release of 2 plates that are stuck at their edges causes an earthquake and seismic waves.
In Light We Can See, young readers learn visible light is light we can see with our eyes. Light is a form of energy that plants use to make food and we use to see things with our eyes. Objects can be opaque, transparent, or translucent depending on how the light interacts with them.
In Magnets, young readers are introduced to the physics of magnets. The alignment of atoms in certain metals creates a magnetic force in a magnet. A magnet has two poles, each pole with an opposite force. Poles that are alike will repel each other and poles that are opposite will attract. Atoms and force are defined.
In Zappity, Zap, Zap, young readers are introduced to electricity—a basic physics concept. Electricity is a general term for electrical energy. The movement of electrons from atom to atom creates the electrical energy that makes batteries and toasters work and doorknobs give shocks.
In Earth in Space, young readers learn Earth is a planet - an object in space that has its own gravity, is spherical, and moves around a sun. The combination of Earth’s tilt on its axis and its orbit around the Sun creates the seasons. Rotation on the axis causes day and night.
In Rocks, young readers discover rocks form when magma (molten material) inside Earth cools. The three main types of rock are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Each type of rock is defined. Geologists study the features of rocks and do tests to classify them.
In The Magnetosphere, young readers learn earth has a magnetic field that begins in the core, surrounds Earth, and extends out into space. The magnetosphere protects Earth from getting too much energy from the Sun and is formed by light energy from the Sun hitting Earth’s magnetic field.
In Sound, young readers learn energy causes air molecules to move slightly back and forth, causing a sound wave. The energy is passed from molecule to molecule, and the more energy transferred, the bigger the wave and the louder the sound. We hear because the thin, flexible tympanic membrane in the ear picks up the motion of the molecules in the sound wave.
In Waves, young readers learn waves are created by the transfer of energy through vibration of molecules. The size of a wave depends on the amount of energy. Molecules in a wave move only slightly up and down or back and forth. A wave has a particular shape. Transverse waves, longitudinal waves, atoms, molecules, and energy are defined.
A Black Hole is an object in space with such massive gravity that no light can escape or bounce off it—it can’t be observed directly. Nearby materials and objects are pulled into it. A black hole can result from a supernova. Most galaxies have a black hole at the center.
In Our Solar System, young readers learn a solar system contains a star and the planets and other objects that orbit it. Our solar system has 8 planets (including Earth) moons, asteroids, and comets organized into an inner and outer solar system with the Asteroid Belt in between.
In What is Astronomy?, young readers learn Astronomy is the study of stars and other objects in space. Ancient peoples studied the sky, named stars and groups of stars, and created calendars. Astronomers use telescopes, including space telescopes, and other tools to study faraway objects.
In The Geosphere, young readers learn the geosphere is made up of layers: crust, mantle, and core. Volcanoes, earthquakes, erosion, glaciers, and animals make big and small changes to the geosphere. Energy resources come from the geosphere. Rock layers and fossils tell Earth’s history.
