Bright, bold and vibrant, Pop Art celebrates irony, and popular media. Pop Art is a contemporary art movement from the late 1950s and 1960s, which drew its inspiration, and deconstructed imagery from pop culture, comic books, advertising, popular icons, movies and consumerism. Some artists most noted for their contribution to the Pop Art movement include Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and David Hockney. Pop Art influenced graphic design, printmaking and stencil art.
Use these Pop Art Stencil Patterns to explore the Pop Art Movement, and to create your own inspired and striking works which POP!
Exploration ideas:
- Monoprinting / Gel Plate Printing: Apply paint to the Gel Printing plate using a rubber roller. Place a stencil onto the inked plate. Cover over with a sheet of paper and rub even pressure to the overlaid paper with your hand. Peel back the paper to reveal your design. NB The exposed areas of the plate will be transferred to the paper. Print different patterns to create a layered artwork, or use the prints in artworks, mixed media and collaged pieces.
- Collage: use the Stencil patterns as decorative collage paper to embellish and adorn both 2D and 3D works.
- Rubbing: Place a sheet of lightweight paper (70-110gsm) over the Pop Art Stencil Patterns by Zart. Using a firm crayon or rubbing block, rub colour across the paper to reveal the raised pattern underneath.
- Stencil: When using the Pop Art Stencil Patterns, we recommend using a Foam Stencil Stamper (also known as a Pouncer). For best results, hold the stamper in an upright position, then repeatably dip the foam end into the paint (rotate stamper as you go to apply an even distribution of colour onto the head). To apply the paint to the Pop Art Stencil Patterns, again hold the stamper in an upright position, and then dab the colour onto the surface – do not push the paint as it may cause edges to bleed.
