Blocks encourage learning in young children. Socially, block play encourages children to make friends, work in a group and cooperate with each other. Physically, block play helps children to develop motor skills, build strength in their fingers and hands, and increase hand / eye co-ordination. Blocks help children to develop skills in design, representation, balance and stability. Block play can also help to promote language and communication skills, as young children describe and play with their constructions. Basic maths is also developed as children add, subtract and multiply the blocks. Physics is learnt through gravity, balance and also geometry. Creatively, blocks also allow children to design their own constructions and build their own original designs. Blocks can also be used in dramatic play – a simple block can represent almost anything in creative play.
